Over the past week or so my artist friend Rosie Alexander (https://www.rosielah.com/) and myself have been working on our most recent artistic collaboration together. A webcomic called Carpe Noctem. The comic – currently found hosted on Rosie’s website – is our first foray together into the world of webcomics. Though, it is not my own foray into webcomics entirely – in high school I created and ran the unironically named webcomic Badly Drawn Penguins that lasted about 9 months when I made it just over TEN YEARS AGO.Read More
Or: How a film put me back on track after depressive, obsessive, repetitive comfort viewing.
A few years ago I went through what was then the most catastrophic break-up I had been through after a two-year relationship. I'll spare the gory details, especially since reconciling with said other party, but this isn't even the story of that.
This is the story of Nicholas Stoller's Forgetting Sarah Marshall and how through it I recovered and got back on my feet. A film that went from a fun first watch years prior to one of my favourite movies of all time. A tale of the power of cinema, catharsis, and resonance.Read More
While I've written a TV/online spec script, a short story, a few movie reviews, and some personal essays in the last week and a bit...I feel I still need to stretch my writing legs. And what better way to do so...Than writing an entire feature screenplay in the space of two days. In reality, it took me 24 hours.Read More
When you hear the name Edgar Wright different thoughts pop up. To most it’s probably the glory of Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. To the more cult-y, his TV show Spaced comes to mind. To the more Marvel nerd-y, potentially his departure from Ant-Man is brought back up. To the more nerd-y in general, maybe it’s the perfection of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. To the more disappointed, perhaps the highly underrated The World’s End sparks memories of being let down. And to everyone else, maybe it’s the amateur movies, the music videos, or other directing work.
This year, however, four years after releasing his last directorial effort (Stupid Ant-Man getting between that), Wright has made Baby Driver. And oh boy. Oh boy.Read More
There’s been more than enough said about Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman already in regards to predominantly men for some reason getting up in arms about it. Or the somehow devaluation of a female director with a more humble film beginnings suddenly been given the reigns of a big franchise despite the fact that so many of the blockbusters of late have come from directors with indie sensibilities and smaller budgets. Or, well, a million other more examples of double standards in the mainstream reception of the movie business. What really matters now that the film is out is this: Is Wonder Woman (2017) a good movie?Read More
As you can see from the header image, TomSka made a script I wrote! Or...A script Christopher Francie wrote! (I am forever cursed by editors making typos on my very conventional name...) You can view the intro, sketch, and outro here!
Quick background: The YouTuber TomSka makes weekly vlogs called "Last Week" and more recently he's been adapting viewer-submitted scripts into short sketches. Of course, I snapped up the chance to write something, and the last couple weeks I've been gunning for people to vote for my own script on Reddit, which eventually won!Read More
My name is Christopher Francis and I'm a writer. Except when I'm not.
There's an eternal dilemma in the world of the writer, where writing is the best and easiest thing in the world...but you just have to get there first. It's easier for some, Stephen King writes all the goddamn time, yet another year goes by while people ponder on whether there will be a new George R. R. Martin book.
I'm more towards George R. R. Martin. Except nowhere near as talented just yet, nor a master of re-writing and re-contextualising actual history into fictional history with more dragons and eunuchs.
In an effort to hone my craft and be more like Stephen King - except nowhere near as talented just yet, nor a master of writing about Maine - I have taken the arbitrary reset button of another January to make another blog on another website to try and stick with it this time.Read More
